Most Gouramis for the aquarium belong to the family Belontidae and are referred to as anabantoids or labyrinth fish. Gouramis have the amazing ability to gulp air from the surface of the water. These fish possess a unique labyrinth organ behind the head that extracts oxygen from the air in order to supplement that obtained through their gills. Gouramis are normally categorized into Dwarf Species, and Larger Species. Dwarf Gouramis are native to India, Burma, and Borneo and have been selectively bred to achieve incredible color forms. Dwarf Gouramis make a wonderful addition to the passive community aquarium adding brilliant color and diversity. Larger Gouramis are native to Asia, and most species grow to around 5-6 inches. Larger Gouramis are very graceful swimmers that have unique coloration and color patterns, and work best in the semi-aggressive community aquarium.
